Elephant Creek got it’s name from P.T. Barnum the owner of Barnum & Bailey Circus. He originally bought land in Port Jefferson so he could winter his circus on Long Island. But eventually used the land to co-founded the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company in 1883 with Charles E. Tooker. The Port Jefferson which can be seen near by is still in operation today. One of the ships is named the PT Barnum built in 1998 and enabled them to run service hourly.
